No, "The Lady in Question," the opening play in ' new season, is not a stage version of one of those World War IIera antiNazi espionage thrillers. But it at least half wants to be. Written by drag diva , who played the title role at its opening in 1988
tiffany and co australia, "Lady" is a loving spoof of the genre, as much tribute as parody and somewhat more restrained than Busch's Bmovie rampages through "Psycho " and the longrunning New York cult fave "Vampire Lesbians of Sodom

It's also a play that Busch has guarded pretty jealously in terms of granting production rights. Theatre Rhino has gone to some length to give it the company's version of an allstar treatment for its local premiere.
The rest of the cast includes such Rhino favorites as , and , the male lead in several of 's gaycamp extravaganzas ( "Medea, the Musical," "The Joy of Gay Sex" ) not to mention local drag diva (of "Christmas with the Crawfords" and "The Andrews Sisters' Hollywood Canteen" ). What Rhino's "Lady" lacks, however, is very strong production values, especially when it comes to Jr.'s lowrent set

As of the Friday preview I attended (the show opened Saturday)
ergo baby carrier, "Lady" also felt like it hadn't quite gelled. Occasional lapses in timing were probably tightened up over the weekend one expects no less from Scheie's track record with comedy. Discrepancies in comic tone between broad camp and more toned down characterizations may take more work to iron out. Then there are also a few scenes that cry out for more inventive comic staging.
That said, "Lady" is still a pretty entertaining, generally diverting and at times very funny lampoon that hides its love for the genre beneath its satire in much the same way that its heroine covers her soft heart and altruism beneath a veneer of selfish indifference.
(pronounced "Garnay," at least at this stage in her career), played by Holsclaw in lightly luxurious drag, is a woman with a seedy past and a rosy present. Once a skimpily clad burlesque piano player, she's now a celebrated concert pianist whose current tour has taken her to Ludwigshafen
monster beats, with her best buddy Kitty (a breathy, ditzytough ) a chorus girl who married a count along for the ride.
Gertrude and Kitty are ignorant of and indifferent to the Nazi menace. But Kitty gets caught up in a plot to rescue an elderly actress, about to be executed for daring to stage an antiHitler play (, a bit young for the role, and for her other part as a dominating, Nazi truebeliever Teutonic matriarch, though she plays both with histrionic gusto).
When Kitty gets offed by their evil Nazi hosts Tena as a comically infantileautocratic Gestapo leader , Taylor as his mother and a hilarious De Marco as bratty, sexually aggressive

Holsclaw carries it off with a light offhandedness that gains strength and depth in the course of the almost twohour play. And Tena, De Marco, Lezin and Larsen (underused as an evil German scientist) provide particularly able support. 's overstated costumes add to the comic tone, especially her fetching '40s gowns and pantsuits for Gertrude. James' baronial castle set is a bit too obviously lowbudget, with its blocky stairs and amateurishly cut doors and windows.
Scheie makes good use of the lowrent production values in places
hermes belt, particularly for a clever escapeovertheAlps bit of staging. In other scenes, though, his hand is less sure. A climactic moment where Gertrude improvises an opera to distract the Baron and Lotte while the infirm, aged actress crawls and clambers precariously up the stairs to the attic behind them as funny as it is, isn't tightly or inventively enough choreographed to make it the comic tour de force it should be.
