Thrift Store Shopping in Cleveland
PEARL RD. ON THE WEST SIDE IS THRIFT STORE ALLEY
From Brooklyn to Strongsville runs Pearl Rd. (Route 42) and along with it a plethora of thrift stores making it a haven for those looking for a bargain, and on top designers, too.
Finders Keepers may not be the largest of the thrift stores on Pearl Rd. but every inch is packed with high fashion. For her I found Anne Klein, Dana Buchman, and Adrienne Vittadini in haute couture
lululemon. Secondary designers were Amanda Smith, Jessica McClintock and Liz Claiborne. Store brands were Ann Taylor, Talbot's, and Nieman Marcus. But there were so many more that they are too numerous to list. For him I found Brooks Brothers and Hugo Boss. For the kids there is Gymboree, The Children's Place and OshKosh. Finders Keepers is high fashion all the way. Gucci, Coach, Louis Vittoun and Baby Phat shoes (some shoes up to size 12 in women's) and purses abound. Manager Aaron Resko says "We're one of the better stores in Cleveland because the items we put out are checked four times for cleanliness before they hit the storefront. We don't sell clothes that are dirty. And we are really proud of our plus size selection, for women all the way up to 5X and we have size 60 men's slacks."
Finders Keepers carries women's, men's and children's clothing and footwear, including cocktail wear, wedding dresses and maternity clothes, as well as bedding, books, VHS tapes and housewares. There is an ample supply of leather, suede and faux fur jackets and coats with a still-plentiful supply of winter boots. Jeans come in Bill Blass, Tommy Hilfiger
clarisonic mia, Calvin Klein and Eddie Bauer. They have a closeout section, too. I noticed the vintage dolls. There are even a few pieces of furniture. But the name of the game here is really high fashion. And the store is decorated with posters of high fashion icons. I netted a beaded and sequined silk black vest for only $3.23.
This thrift store feature three 50% off days a week - Monday, Thursday and Saturday and that is on all items. Wednesdays are Senior Citizen days with half off. If it's your birthday and you can prove it with a photo ID you get 50% off

casque beats, Mastercard, Visa, Diner's Club and Discover are welcome. No checks accepted. Be sure about what you buy - there are no returns, exchanges or refunds.
Two miles south is Thrift Nation. This store is big. Most notable about Thrift Nation is their huge selection of home furnishings - sofas, dining room tables, cocktail and end tables, cabinets, entertainment centers, televisions, lamps, paintings, mirrors and home accents. There were even sewing machines, both vintage and modern. They have a wall of books and shelves of LP albums, VHS tapes, Cds and cassette tapes. They may sport women's
vivienne westwood, men's and children's clothing but you won't find any designer duds here - most everything is off-brand except for the occasional Ann Marino and Etienne Anger shoes or Anne Klein II raincoat. Manager Sharon Ezzo says "We pride ourselves on having the lowest prices on clothes - we've secret shopped other thrift stores. Just because we're second-hand doesn't mean we're second class meaning we don't put out anything ripped or torn. We get quality items in from Brecksville, Broadview Hts. And Twinsburg
lululemon. We partner with area churches to meet the needs of the community. Closed on Sundays.

Two miles farther south is Value World. Value World is HUGE! And so is the selection of top designers from shirts, sweaters, skirts, blazers, jackets and coats in women's, men's, infant and toddler and children's clothing. Names I spotted that I hadn't seen before were Halston III, Clio, Ellen Tracy, Chico's, Albert Nipon and Banana Republic. There was a Patra evening gown in their selection of After Five and cocktail dresses. Scarves and belts hang at the end of each rack. Hats and purses hang on racks above the clothing. They carry medical uniforms. Value World offers a fantastic selection of costume jewelry, six counters of three tiers each.
There is a large plus-size section of three long racks called Queens: shirts, sweaters, slacks, suits, blazers, skirts and jeans. I found a burgundy, black and gold blazer with bib lined with rhinestones on the collar, lapel, button and pocket flaps for $6.89.
There are rows of jeans of every make. Half of the wall is infant and toddler clothing. Pictures, mirrors and lamps line the shelves above the clothes throughout the store. I bought a bronze lamp for $8
pandora beads.60. They even have wigs. There are six four-tier shelves of shoes with all the brand names
vanessa bruno. Their housewares department has quite a selection of dishware as well as cooking utensils. Crystal, wooden and brass home accents along with holiday decorations line the shelves. They have a small selection of books, toys, televisions and electronic equipment. The men's ties are gorgeous in color and design by Zylos, Gitano and Evan Picone. There are rows and rows of men's slacks, suits, blazers, sweaters and sports team wear. There is an ample linen section that even sells material for sewing. There were a few pieces of furniture in the front of the store, most notably a fashionable chair and ottoman.
Behind the front counter are the designer purses. My genuine Chanel purse, albeit in need of a $35 repair from a shoemaker, went for $50 at Value World. They carry Dolce Gabana, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Dooney Bourke, Kathy van Zeeland, Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs. Genuine and faux fur coats range from $30 to $75. Cash, Visa, Discover, Mastercard and American Express. Checks are not accepted. One drawback - no dressing rooms. Be prepared to wear leggings, a thin shirt or leotard for trying clothes on over.
Less than a block down the way is The Goodwill Industries. They carry all the usual haute couture and secondary designer brands with the additions of Cache and Donna Karan for women and Joseph and Feiss and Claiborne for men. Leather jackets can be had for as low as $12.50 (that was my black Valerie Stevens buy at The Goodwill along with a pair of black vinyl slacks and skirt to complete the look for $8 and $5). I also bought Chico's cotton/spandex three-quarter length sleeve t-shirts in five different colors for $5 each. Fur hats and coats, both real and faux, can be found at The Goodwill (I bought a short faux animal fur for $20). And so can jewelry, both real and faux. (I netted Tiffany, Cartier and David Yurman-inspired replica earrings for $1 each). They sell overstock lingerie and other goods from Target as well as items from other companies. The infant, toddler and children's departments are excellent. They feature medical uniforms and maternity clothes. Their housewares department is a third of the store and I found Christmas, not just dinnerware, but china, for $10. Crystal, wooden and brass home accents, wicker baskets and flowers, cookware, electronics, books, DVDs, VHS tapes and toys round out their housewares department
chan luu. Shoes include Sketchers and Ugg boots along with the very fashionable Amalfi and Prada. Men's suits go to size 50 as do their slacks. Manager Debbie Smith says "We are committed to providing the highest quality of merchandise at the lowest possible price. The Goodwill Mission Statement is to improve the quality of life and employment opportunities for people in the communities we serve."
Goodwill specials run on every Sunday on a rotation of colored tags - one color is $1 and a second color is 50% off. Senior citizens get an additional 10% off on Tuesdays by showing their Buckeye Card
casque beats. Cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express. No checks accepted. Dressing rooms and public restrooms are available.
The Salvation Army Family Store
Three miles down the road is The Salvation Army Family store and this is another huge store where you can name your brand. I walked in the front door and was greeted by a circular rack of Hugo Boss blazers for men. Unlike the other thrift stores, which separate their clothing by category and size, The Salvation Army separates by category of clothing (blouses, shirts, slacks, skirts, dresses, blazers, evening wear, cardigan sweaters, sweaters
chan luu bracelets, vests, exercise wear
vanessa bruno, lingerie, name brand labels and so on) and then color but not by size so you really have to dig through the offerings to find your fit. There is a generous plus-size section for men and women and even a rack of vintage clothing. They have a good selection of furniture - sofas and chairs, cocktail and end tables, dining room sets, cabinets and beds that rivals Thrift Nation. There are racks of shoes and some accessories - purses, scarves and belts and some jewelry - with a Coach purse priced at $19.99
vivienne westwood. I happened upon a chocolate brown faux fur three-quarter length coat for $29.99 that was 50% off because it was Wednesday when all items except green tickets and furniture are half-off. The Salvation Army also has a colored tag rotation system with a new color 50% off for the week. The housewares cover one wall and are arranged by color. But the real deal here is the clothing for men, women and children

Captain Wilson referred me to the website featuring the Mission Statement of the organization: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination."
