Calgary floods: What you need to know now,
Cheap Oakley Sunglasses, Residents forced to flee their homes in Calgary, one of the areas hardest hit by widespread flooding in Alberta this week, are being told it could be days before they are allowed to return because safety concerns about rising waters. Calgarians can call 311 for any flood-related updates. The city said in an emergency briefing Friday night that people in homes along the Elbow River will be allowed back in the next 2 days. There is no timeline for homes along Bow River, as it is still not safe. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said the Elbow has been at its peak for some time, but is not declining. He said it is possible the Bow River will stay at this level, but there is a chance for another surge depending on "upstream events" like dams being breached. Officials believe there will be several hours warning if that happens. The power is out in most of downtown, and officials say the outage will be long lasting. Nenshi says it will be extremely unlikely that it will be back on until the middle of next week. The next city briefing is planned for early Saturday morning. Parts of southern Alberta could also see another five to 10 millimetres through the weekend.

City officials say water quality in Calgary has not been affected and there is no boil-water advisory in place at this time, but they are asking residents to limit water use. For example, avoid using dishwashers and washing machines and take quick showers and shallow baths. "The very high river flows have resulted in high levels of silt and debris in the water coming into the citys drinking water treatment plants," said the city in a release. "This silt is starting to slow down the treatment process, creating a growing load on the filtration processes. As a result, it is taking longer to treat the incoming water which presents a challenge to meet water demand." Enmax has a list of current outages affecting Calgary.
Just before noon on Friday the decision was made to evacuate many buildings downtown because of power outages. Compromised buildings those without their own power source were being cleared. That includes many offices towers, hotels and condominiums. "If you are in a non-evacuation zone, (e.g. at home) prepare for potential power outages. Charge your devices, save your work," tweeted Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi Friday afternoon. Fire Chief Bruce Burrell says transformer stations downtown are inundated with water. If they had been left running, he said they would have blown up so they were taken off line before they were damaged. Now full of water, officials believe they will still be operational once they are dried out and oiled back up. They plan to build berms around the stations, pump out the water and let them dry but that will take a number of days. But Burrell said they could be getting help as local construction companies are offering assistance.
